I’ve been using Twitter (latterly X, of course) since 2009. It was fun at first, and occasionally useful, a good place to get up-to-date information about sport, news or whatever. I connected with lots of people I enjoyed chatting to.
Things change, though. Since the new ownership of the platform took over, I’ve seen too many changes for the worse. At times the place seems overwhelmed with divisive, populist, right-wing bullshit. I’m all for free-speech, but hate speech needs to be filtered out. Rather than doing this, the owner of the platform seems to delight in amplifying obvious lies and mad conspiracy theories. I want nothing to do with it.
So, I’m ex-X. My account is still there but I’m not going to be using it. Like many people, I’ve emigrated to Bluesky – come check me out over there if you’re on the platform! So far, I love it. It’s like Twitter was back in the good old days – and, what’s more, I think the decentralized underlying technology means it’s a lot harder for the platform to be corrupted by a single malign individual as Twitter has been.
I’m here if you want to say hi: https://bsky.app/profile/simonkewin.co.uk.
UPDATE: I have started using my Twitter feed in a limited way, I post stuff there, but very rarely look at the platform. Bluesky remains the best way to interact with me.
